What Makes a Great Sock?

Hopefully, you’ve seen some socks that you love, and some that will look after your feet while you walk, hike, run, or even go out to dinner. But what makes the best socks? Here are a few things to check for when buying socks.

Men’s socks are made from a variety of different materials  including but not limited to:

  • Wool
  • Cotton
  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Acrylic
  • Silk

You might even find some special materials in some types of socks. Wool socks tend to be the warmest, but they don’t wick moisture away from the skin. This can leave feet feeling clammy during physical activity. Wool socks can also be bulky, and they aren’t suitable for vegans.

Cotton is more breathable but doesn’t allow moisture to evaporate. However, it’s much less bulky, still warm, plus comfortable, and flexible.

Silk is stylish, comfortable, and breathable, but often doesn’t last as long as cotton or wool. Silk socks are perfect for dressy occasions.

Synthetic materials are great for wicking moisture away from the skin. The best gym socks are often a blend of cotton and man-made materials to give a combination of comfort and practicality.

Size or Fit

Don’t buy socks that are too small or way too big. Get to know what size socks fit you best and stick to it. Socks that are too big can bunch up and become extremely uncomfortable. Too small, and you risk your sock falling down inside your shoe. Nightmare.

Type of Sock

Choose the right sock for the occasion. Dress socks won’t keep your feet snug halfway up a mountain. Conversely, thick, woolen hiking socks won’t look great with your smartest shoes for that party. Have a couple of pairs for every occasion.

Hopefully, we’ve taken some of the stress out of sock shopping. Remember, look after your feet, and your feet will look after you!
